There is a song being hailed as “The Worst Song Ever.” Well, I wouldn’t go that far. The song was sang by thirteen year old Rebecca Black, an honors student from a rich neighborhood in LA. Her parents paid for her to sing this song and create a video. The song was written by Clarence Jey and Patrice Wilson, who are old enough to know better.
There is much to be desired by the song and video. First of all, through no fault of Miss Black, the lyrics are repetitive, shallow, and stupid. The lyrics also don’t fit the video. She talks about seeing her friends on the bus, but instead they’re driving a car, which I can only assume that the driver has stolen from one of his wealthy parents, as Rebecca and he friends are only thirteen.
These shallow, emotionless lyrics are matched by Miss Black’s complete lack of stage presence. She stands emotionless and dead-pans into the camera, presumably because you can’t really act out music that has no emotional value without making a fool of yourself.
In addition to this, the auto-tune job on the song itself is really bad. Rebecca Black has little control over her pitch, and despite the programming in the song, it really shows. That being said, I am 100% against using auto-tune in music. If you can’t sing it well enough without auto-tune, then you shouldn’t be singing it publicly. (And that goes for Kesha too.)
Despite the fact that nobody involved with the creation or production of this blunder piece, I think people should lay off this girl. It wouldn’t make a damn bit of difference if it was of this quality or if it was epic, everyone just wants something to make fun of. It was fine when it was Twilight, but this is a thirteen year old girl. People like yayy992 are completely out of line when they say “I hope you cut yourself and I hope you get a eating disorder.”
The problems with the video are the failed auto-tune job, the amount of skill the singer has, the quality of the filming, the lyrics, the composition of the music, and the concept. This girl wasn’t ready to produce a real song. Complain about that all you like, but try not to scar this girl for life. If people keep harassing her, and calling her with death threats, she might really get a fucking disorder.
I give this song a 2/10
I give the attention it’s getting a 0/10. Ignore her, and she’ll go away.
My only hope is that what money her parents don’t make her put to college should be spent on voice and piano lessons. (And acting lessons. Why not?) Then, she should learn to write lyrics.
Rebecca Black, come back in ten years once you’ve learned your trade. And next time you get an offer, make sure it’s from a real record label. You almost got the shit scammed out of you.
